What is urgent care?
Urgent care clinics are healthcare centers that offer fast care for injuries or illnesses that are not serious enough to go to an emergency room. They allow patients to be seen with little or no wait, and without the high cost of an ER visit.
Oftentimes, you can check in online to get in line and some places like CommunityMed offer a virtual waiting room to minimize your time in the office.
Urgent care clinics treat a range of acute conditions. Common illnesses and injuries treated include cuts and broken bones, diarrhea, nausea, urinary infections, rashes, strep, flu or other infections.
Do I need to schedule an appointment in advance at an urgent care clinic?
No, walk-ins are welcome. Some urgent care clinics allow you to schedule online, which also allows you to get your place in line sooner.
Do urgent care clinics take Medicare/Medicaid?
Of the government insurance options, our Arlington clinic is in network with Medicare and Tricare. However, we are not in network for Medicaid.
How is urgent care different from emergency care?
Urgent care clinics handle issues that require immediate care but aren’t necessarily life-threatening, such as lacerations, broken bones, colds, asthma, allergies, pink eye, and other minor ailments. Urgent care clinics also offer diagnostic testing for COVID, strep throat and flu.
Emergency rooms handle true medical emergencies, including conditions such as heart attacks, seizures or loss of consciousness, overdose, trauma or severe pain.
